The History of Babetta

Beginnings

The Babetta moped, produced in Czechoslovakia from the 1970s, became an iconic and affordable form of transportation, designed for short-distance commuting. Powered by a 50cc two-stroke engine, it gained popularity not only in Czechoslovakia but also internationally, thanks to its efficiency and reliability. While production ended in the 1990s, the Babetta remains a beloved symbol of Czechoslovak motoring history.

Discontinuation

The production of the Babetta moped with a gas engine ceased in the 1990s due to market changes and increasing foreign competition. Despite its 50cc two-stroke engine’s popularity for both urban and rural use, the moped’s production ended as new regulations and shifting market trends emerged. The Babetta’s legacy remains, however, as a cherished part of Czechoslovak history.

Revitalization

We have revitalized the Babetta brand by developing a new range of light electric vehicles, starting with an innovative e-bike and speed pedelec. These modern electric models combine the classic Babetta simplicity with advanced electric technology for an eco-friendly riding experience. The new Babetta brings a fresh, sustainable future while honoring its rich historical legacy.

Babetta 228
The Babetta 228 was a series of mopeds produced in Czechoslovakia starting in 1970, featuring a 50cc two-stroke engine with either a 1-speed or 2-speed automatic transmission, reaching speeds of 25–50 km/h. It was designed as a lightweight, affordable moped to compete with the VéloSoleX, and became the first to feature electronic ignition. Production began with model 28 and evolved through the years, with later models using smaller 16-inch wheels.
1970
Babetta 207
The Babetta 207, introduced in 1972, improved upon the earlier 206 model by adding a more powerful engine and a new rear suspension system in 1975 for better comfort and handling. It was initially aimed at the German market, where its lower engine power and speed (25 km/h) meant it didn’t require a driver’s license. The 207's design and performance made it a popular choice, with further updates solidifying its place in the Babetta legacy.
1972
Babetta 210
In 1983, the Babetta 210 replaced earlier models, featuring a more efficient engine and a 2-speed transmission for better versatility. However, the transmission system proved unreliable, prompting a switch to a 1-speed transmission for improved dependability. The Babetta 210 remained in production until 1997, after which the brand ceased manufacturing, though Sting 2000 s.r.o. continues to produce spare parts, keeping the Babetta legacy alive among collectors and enthusiasts.

In 2020, the Babetta 2.0 project reached a pivotal moment with the presentation of its prototype at an exhibition in Oslo. Despite a tight timeline, the team worked tirelessly, pushing through challenges like a manufacturing defect in the carbon frame and last-minute design updates. The Babetta's unveiling was met with immediate success and positive feedback, marking the brand's return with a modern twist on the iconic moped.
